All you wanted to know about the 'Walk-in Closets'

In one of our previous posts, we had mentioned having received a query from Mary A. Stewart who asked us: "What is a walking closet"?

At the first instance, we were also not sure what she was talking about. "Walking Closet"? Could this be a pseudonym to any particular kind of closet, or was it something altogether newer thing?

We asked the lady one more time through her twitter handle to confirm whether she really meant to know about 'Walking Closet'? "Yes", she said. One of her architect friends had suggested this to her during her last visit to her house when she had told the architect the problem of shortage of storage space she had in her newly built house. The house square footage was relatively large and the spatial layout offered no constraint per se to have more storage space, which was efficient in handling as well as conveniently located within or near to her room.

So, here was the solution to her problem... The solution was providing a "WALK-IN CLOSET", and this was what the lady's architect friend must have suggested her (and not the literal 'walking' closet.

So what exactly is a 'Walk-in Closet'?

Going by the literal dictionary meaning, a typical 'Closet' is a systematically designed array of Wardrobes/ Almirahs/ Cabinets/ Enclosed recesses that forms integral part of a specific room for the purpose of storing clothing, linens, household supplies, and all sort of personal belongings.

The prefix 'Walk-in' is used with such array of closet(s) when

the user of a particular room can literally walk-in-to the space housing these array of closets to access the belongings stored therein. It, therefore, refer to a space used for storing things that is large enough for a person to enter and walk around in.

As such, 'Walk-in Closets' are nothing different than the age-old storage systems that are provided within/besides a particular room within a home or office where one can go walking-in, and use the space freely. Such an array of storage spaces are usually accessed through a doorway which might be provided with a lockable door for the purpose of privacy and security.

Modern day home builders, design houses and building contractors provide 'walk-in closets' for at least the master bedroom if not in all major rooms. The cost is a little more, but the uses are many more.

If you also intend to have such a 'Walk-in Closet' for your home, contact us and we #bricksnmortar would be happy to design one for you :-)
