Dear Samantha,

Staircases made in steel (structural steel, as it is known in technical terminology!) also use the same concept of flights, landings and steps comprising of the risers and treads. As such, there can be no deterrents that may restrict one to utilize the space under the stair's flight(s). Though, the only catch in some cases can be if the staircase is spiral or vertical ladder-rung-type in nature, or not having a floor and/or platform at the base. Otherwise there seems no problem whatsoever in utilizing the space in the same manner as for any other staircase.

thank you very much team bricks-n-mortar for the nice suggestion, which i have incorporated in my new house being constructed in the outskirts of gurgaon (haryana) ncr region. i have utilised the space under the stairs in making a store room for my son's utilities and have carved out a few small cupboards for storing so many such loose things which otherwise are a problem to manage.
